Bourby L’Éclair (previously known as Bourby Webster) is a Western Australian musician and was the founder of the Perth Symphony Orchestra .[1]

She was named Western Australian of the Year (Arts & Culture) in 2019.[2][3]

Early life and education

L’Éclair was born in the United Kingdom and studied music at the University of Oxford before completing postgraduate studies in performance at the Royal College of Music in London.[4]

She later earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Australia.[4]Career

Music and arts entrepreneurship

In 2011 she founded the Perth Symphony Orchestra.[1]

Under her leadership, the orchestra developed a reputation for presenting orchestral music in unconventional formats designed to broaden audience appeal.[1]

She stepped down from the orchestra in 2022.[5]

Public engagement and leadership roles

After departing her role at the Perth Symphony Orchestra, L’Éclair was appointed Director of Creative Activation and Public Engagement at Edith Cowan University.[5][6]

Rowing career

L’Éclair is a coxswain in the sport of rowing.

She is the coxswain of the Western Australian Masters rowing crew known as The Black Swans. In 2025 the crew competed at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.[7]

L’Éclair sits on the Board of Rowing WA.[8]

During her tenure with the Perth Symphony Orchestra, L’Éclair worked to make orchestral music more appealing to contemporary audiences.[1]

She is an advocate for women in the music industry.[9][10]

Personal name

Public sources primarily refer to her as Bourby Webster. In May 2026 she announced that she was adopting a new surname and would be known as Bourby L'Éclair.[13]
